Recently a ton of great sites have popped up on the internet (including newsvine). Many of them you may not have heard of, that is the main point of this "article". I've decided not to list popular well known sites such as flickr and others (although it could be disputed what is well known and what isn't). Without further ado here are the top 10 sites you should know about:
#1 http://www.meebo.com - A small upstart company that has brought trillian (http://www.trillian.cc) like features to the web. You can access Yahoo! Messanger, Jabber, Gtalk, AIM, ICQ and MSN directly through the web in a desktop like enviroment that supports multiple connections to different IM networks much like trillian.
#2 http://www.rememberthemilk.com - Another cool web 2.0 creation. If you are like me you tend to forget to do things. Also if you are like me you are connected to the world in some fashion no matter where you go (my cellphone has yet to leave my side in years). Remeberthemilk is excellent because it supports reminders via cellphones, email and instant messaging.
#3 http://www.blinklist.com - Blinklist is another bookmark management site competing for attention ever since the success of del.icio.us. However Blinklist has a snazzy look and a bunch of awesome features that make del.icio.us dull in comparison. Make sure to check this site out to see all the different features it sports.
#4 http://www.digg.com - Some might call digg.com the slashdot.org killer. It might well be. Digg.com is an excellent technology news source that has put editorial control back in the hands of users. Defiantly worth a look, or a blink (see #3).
#5 http://www.clusty.com - Clusty.com is a nifty little search engine that will most likely always live in Google's shadow but is worth a look all the same. Clusty like its name implies clusters your search results into different categories which makes finding the desired information you are searching for easier. There are a bunch of other small features that make this search engine worth checking out.
#6 http://www.writely.com - Word processing on the web? It was bound to happen eventually. Writely is the perfect for firing up that word document in the library or ... well I'm not sure how often you run into a computer without word processing. Regardless of its usability it still is pretty cool.
#7 http://www.last.fm - Last.fm is kind of hard to describe. It is part social music tagger, part personal radio and well I guess you have to check it out to figure out the rest. Basically if you find yourself listening to lots of music while you are at your computer Last.fm might well become your best friend... well a new site you check out lots at least.
#8 http://www.pixel2life.com - Is the haven for all things tutorial. Its huge database offers a range tutorials on anything from ColdFusion to Microsoft Outlook. The tutorials are all computer related (you won't find out how to install the plumbing here).
#9 http://www.blummy.com - Blummy.com offers a unique approach to keeping and sharing bookmarks (something that seems to be all the rage recently). Check it out if you have more bookmarks then you know what to do with.
#10 http://www.deviantART.com - Last but not least is deviantART.com. Although deviantART has been around for a number of years it seems to be only a home to a small niche on the internet. If you haven't heard of deviantART make sure to take a peek.
Here are some sites that have been listed in the comments section of the article that deserve a mention.
http://www.hipcal.com - Hipcal is a web 2.0 online calendar and to-do list (formely known as mypimp).
http://pandora.com - Pandora is an excellent music discovery site that should have made my list but didn't.
http://www.reddit.com - News site similar in concept to digg and newsvine. As with both digg and newsvine it has its own style and set of features.
I like you list, Five!
I love the sites you listed. My new desktop wallpaper is from devaintART. I find Writely very cool and lastfm is virtually the same thing as Pandora but still cool.
Well, I'd have to agree these are all great sites except for the last one. deviantART sorta went downhill a long time ago, and the line between what is art and what is, well... crap has been blurred beyond repair. Not to mention the whole Jark/Spyed ordeal has just shaken my faith in their community to the point where I won't be going back.
For better desktop backgrounds, my personal reccomendation is Caedes: www.caedes.net
@ five
Ah yes, I forgot about the Taylor Behl incident. I always found it more closely related to MySpace (EVIL) than deviantART, though.
I must say the one time I went to digg.com it seems liked a new haven for kids who spend too much time online with little maturity/knowledge. Maybe it was just the one item I read on there though. As far as #10, I left so many years ago I know not of the incidents mentioned in the posts above; nor is it all that new; or as new as the others in the list seem.
A site worth mentioning from my standpoint would be http://www.shutterbook.com. I'm bias in this post as the developer is an associate; but it, like a few others in the list, is a lesser known alternative to larger sites out there. In this case, it's another photo album/storage/community.
I don't know, but for some reason all of these sites don't really interest me. Many of them just seem too hyped up with the Web 2.0 label, without really offering a solution to a problem for me. I can see how they're useful to some, but I doubt I'll ever use any of these sites.
Other than last.fm, which I guess I use now that Audioscrobbler was consumed by it :-)
i would recommend you add pandora.com to your list (a music recommendation /radio station engine)
also flickr.com or 23hq.com for library photo hosting and bubbleshare.com for free simple album photo hosting
still missing the 37signals bunch (basecamp/backpack/etc)
it might be a subjective thing but i'd still pick del.icio.us over blinklist
i still doubt the list is complete .. i'd recommend you check out techcrunch.com for these sorts of cool webservices often labeled as web2.0
yea another one is pando :an excellent p2p , torrent-based method for easily sending (large) files over email. the system does require software, altho it is entirely free of cost, spyware or advertising and enormously simple.
Oh my god, such an excellent list and nary a mention of Pandora (www.pandora.com). Everyone who sees this please visit. If you like it let it be known here. I am going to be bookmarking this page..... for all the cool stuff that's been turning up....
One I don't see mentioned here but would love to bring up is www.hipcal.com. This is a Web2.0 calendar that I have, since starting to use it, come to find necessary to survive.
adium is a better app for multiply chat platforms (for macs). But good list, i like last.fm
I started with deviantart years ago, but flickr has obsoleted it for me. DA makes uploading many things at once very difficult.. There area lot of hoops to jump through. They also deal with frequent server troubles, very slow loading pages, and a lot of 'clique-iness'... flickr obsoleted my need for DA, though I am biased as everything that I work with usually involves photography.
A very good list. Thanks for sharing!
RememberTheMilk sounds like a hoot! I
Good stuff! You're already making good use of your newsvine invite. :-)
I have been using RTM for awhile and I do love it :-)
Some good links here, although I am more of a pandora user than last.fm
i've never heard of meebo! that is awesome!
Why do all web 2.0 application designs look similar?
Good point bendingbeats, now that you mention it, they kinda do
Ive been running infini8 theme on windows from deviant art.... its beauty.
Very nice list - http://www.pandora.com is a site I'd definitely recommend!
Nice list, I had already heard of all those except blummy, which is pretty neat. Thanks!
did we already add reddit.com ? highly recommended. squidoo.com is interesting as well, i am also a big fan of my netvibes.com dashboard as well.
but at the end of day - how does all this stuff help save our ever more rapidly dying planet?
You're in Easy Mode. If you prefer, you can use XHTML Mode instead. |
